A Joint Basic Study by the South Pacific Applied Geosience Commission (SOPAC) and the Government of Japan undertaken for marine geological and other studies relating to mineral prospecting
to assess the mineral resources potential of the deep sea bottom in the offshore regions of SOPAC member countries.
This entry presents survey conducted in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of the Fiji Islands, for the Fiscal Year 2004 and its resultant bathymetry datasets produced by the Joint Japan International Cooperatiopn Agency and SOPAC Deepsea Mineral Survey.. Survey was conducted from December 15, 2004 to January 11, 2005. Survey included bathymetric survey, seafloor observation (FDC), samplings (FPG AD), was conducted in the two areas (Central Hill and ERZ A) for assessing the potentiality of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. Further, the environmental survey using RO and MC was carried out as
baseline studies of the area to predict the magnitude of mining impact on the deepsea environment.
Bathymetry datasets can be downloaded from the appropriate link under Distribution Infor with appropriate permission from the Secretariat.The survey area for this study is the area connecting the points below: Latitude Longitude 1 16°00'S 177°15' E 2 16°00'S 177°35' E 3 16°30'S 177°35' E 4 16°30'S 177°15' E 1 16°00'S 177°15' E
