This report is prepared in response to the need to contribute to and facilitate implementation of national support to the formulation of National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDS) in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It is an
initiative of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) that serves as a prenatal to the NSDS. The policy implication of this approach is to determine if FSM is committed to put in place the institutional mechanisms needed to take a systematic and holistic approach to achieving sustainable development through integrated economic, social, and environmental policy planning. Much of the input material was synthesized from reports of previous conferences on the subject, literature on environmental management and sustainable development from international organizations, reports and books on FSM, and consultation with key actors from government as well as civil society representatives. The collected information has been analyzed and the resultant findings are presented in key areas of sustainable development strategy elaboration, such as priority and targets, strategies, indicators, and institutional
framework.
