This report was commissioned by the Pacific Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change Project (PEBACC) – an International Climate Initiative (IKI) project implemented by SPREP in conjunction with the Government of Vanuatu. The project advocates ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) as a cost-effective and appropriate response to climate change in Pacific island countries.
The report addressed three main tasks:
1. the mapping of key ecosystems for Vanuatu and Tanna in terms of their type, condition and the ecosystem services they potentially generate;
2. an economic evaluation of the benefits to local communities arising from these ecosystem services; and
3. an assessment of the risk to community sustainability from threats and pressures on ecosystem health, including climate change related hazards, for three of the most
This synthesis report provides an overview of the first seven steps involved to identify, prioritise, and implement ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) projects in Port Vila, Vanuatu, and is based on a detailed series of technical reports prepared for the PEBACC project.

The contents is the result of a collaborative effort between the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazard Department and the Pacific-Australia Climate Change Science and Adaptation Planning (PACCSAP) Program – a component of the Australian Government’s International Climate Change Adaptation Initiative.
The research sought to understand the adaptive capacity of both Pacific island countries (PICs) and Australia’s disaster response to a potential increase in disasters driven by climate change. This report provides results for Vanuatu – one of four case study countries selected for deeper analysis.

This study examines the current influence of climate change on Samoa by looking at the three tenets of vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. It also analyzes how environmentally secure Samoa is and will be, using Thomas Homer Dixon’s theory on climate change and conflict. Finally, the paper seeks to outline the current system of adaptation awareness that exists between government, community and foreign aid
components, and propose future strategies.

A team from Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research travelled to Rarotonga during July/August 2023 to carry out monitoring of biocontrols released in previous years. The team used drones to conduct monitoring surveillance for the invasive African Tulip tree species, using LiDAR and other imagery techniques.
This newsletter also provides an update on the control of the biocontrols.
Since the adoption of Agenda 21 following the United Nations Conference on Environment and development in 1992, this report constitutes the first opportunity for Samoa to assess its situation with regard to sustainable development in the past decade
This Community Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment (CV&A) findings from Saoluafata and Lano represent what most communities of Samoa are facing with respect to the challenges from climate extremes and variability. Adaptation options identified and prioritized with consensus from the communities opted mostly for soft solutions and some hard solutions that will help improve the livelihoods of the communities.
An assessment framework based on key habitats in Samoa:
* cloud forest and uplands
* lowlands, coastal strand
* nearshore marine, offshore marine, and rivers and streams
* climate change, air quality, waste disposal, renewable energy, and population pressures.
It also assesses the status of Samoa’s species of high conservation value, especially those that are endemic and critically endangered.

Coupled climate and sea-level changes deduced from Huon Peninsula coral terraces of the last ice age
Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, is a tectonically unstable, uplifting shoreline ringed by emergent coral terraces. The terraces were formed during episodes of rapid sea-level rise when corals constructed large, discrete coral platforms that were subsequently uplifted. Uranium series ages of four prominent Huon Peninsula last glacial (OIS 3) coral terraces coincide with the timing of major North Atlantic climate reversals at intervals of 6000^7000 yr between 30 000 yr and 60 000 yr ago.
This chapter provides a brief description of Papua New Guinea, its past and present climate as well as projections for the future. The climate observation network and the availability of atmospheric and oceanic data records are outlined. The annual mean climate, seasonal cycles and the influences of large-scale climate features such as the West Pacific Monsoon and patterns of climate variability (e.g. the El Niño‑Southern Oscillation) are analysed and discussed.
