In 2007, a total of 230 species found in Palau were listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resource (IUCN) Red List as vulnerable to some degree including 53 species listed as near threatened, vulnerable, or endangered 64 species listed as data deficient.

Koror and Airai have the highest populations in Palau with more development (roads, residential development and
industry). By comparison, Kayangel and Ngarchelong have small populations and very limited pollution. Loss of fish
catch from terrestrial pollution for Hatohobei and Sonsorol, two states with minimal population and negligible development, is assumed to be zero, and they are not included in the estimates.
Between March 12 and 14, 2015, Tropical Cyclone Pam struck Vanuatu as an extremely destructive Category 5 cyclone, with estimated wind speeds of 250km/h and wind gusts that peaked at around 320km/h. This assessment provides estimates to the the damages and losses, and identifies the needs of the affected population.

There are not perfect data which describe the distribution and abundance of every marine habitat and species in the Pacific. And certainly not at a scale that is useful for national planning in the ocean. Bioregionalisation, or the classification of the marine environment into spatial units that host similar biota, can serve to provide spatially explicit surrogates of biodiversity for marine conservation and management. Existing marine bioregionalisations however, are at a scale that is too broad for national governments in the Pacific to use.

Post Disaster Needs Assessment, Environment & Economic Analysis of Loss and Damage to Environmental Goods and Services in Vanuatu, related to Severe Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Harold (April 2020).
The PacWaste Plus Programme has a specific Key Result Area (KRA) which requires specific action on the collation and review of existing data on waste and pollution at the regional and national level and identify key areas where further data needs to be collected including gender sensitive and rights-based information. Specifically, the project seeks to, i) Undertake waste audits in Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru and Vanuatu. This dataset holds waste audit data for Vanuatu, put together by Tonkin &Taylor on behalf of the Secretariat.
Traditional leaders, Island Councils, communities and government have all contributed to the establishment and management of PAs. Most Cook Islands PAs are not covered by legislation, and the few that are legislated vary in their levels of protection. Only three of the 14 terrestrial PAs are covered by formal government-based legislations and regulations, which include the Suwarrow National Park Declaration, Takutea Island Regulations and Takuvaine Water Catchment Regulations.
