PacWaste is a four year project (2014–2017) funded by the European Union and implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), to improve regional hazardous waste management
across the Pacific in the priority areas of healthcare waste, asbestos waste, E-waste and integrated atoll waste management.

FSM is one of the 15 countries participating in PacWaste, with activities taking place in the project domains of healthcare waste and asbestos

The collection, collation and review of data on the management of healthcare waste and best-practice options for its disposal in FSM under the PacWaste project. Information regarding the waste management process occurring, from ward-level waste generation through to ultimate treatment and disposal was collected during audits of the four largest hospitals:
• Yap State Hospital, Yap
• Chuuk State Hospital, Chuuk
• Pohnpei State Hospital, Pohnpei
• Kosrae State Hospital, Kosrae

Under the International Waters Project (IWP) in Tuvalu, a pilot project was established to address
“waste” with the aim of reducing the contamination of groundwater and coastal water by human
and animal waste.
Community-based activities included “low-tech” solutions to addressing environmental
