This record holds a bathymetry dataset from a survey conducted within the sea areas of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia, for the Fiscal Year 1998. Bathymetry dataset was produced by the Joint Japan International Cooperatiopn Agency and SOPAC Deepsea Mineral Survey. Survey was conducted from May 5th to July 17, 1998 within the Marshalls sea area and May 3 to July 18, l998 within the FSMs sea area .

The creation of the independent and sovereign nation of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) under the Compact of Free Association with the United States caused a growing need for social and economic development planning. Consequently, as in many developing countries, administrators and planners in the FSM, in their quest for social and economic development often contend with incomplete or unavailable information when it is needed.

The purpose of the HIES survey is to obtain information on the income, consumption pattern, incidence of poverty, and saving propensities for different groups of people in Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). This information will be used to guide policy makers in framing socio-economic developmental policies and in initiating financial measures for improving economic conditions of the people.
Some more specific outputs from the survey are listed below:
a) To obtain expenditure weights and other useful data for the revision of the consumer price index;
