The report gives an overview of the cruise of R/V Kilo Moana, a US flagged science vessel belonging to the Office of Navel Research and operated by the University of Hawaii. The cruise took place on the 26th of March 2008 to 12th may of 2008. The core project focused on the conducting near bottom sidescan sonar, oceanographic and geophysical surveys of seafloor spreading centers in the Lau basin. The survey data will examine the distribution and nature of hydrothermal activity surrounding various seafloor spreading centers and investigating their geologic and geophysical context.

This record shows the track of the survey cruise in 1981 for the Tarawa Nearshore Project. The Project was undertaken to survey the possible areas for the Betio-Bairiki causeway site. The map is a Navigation Plan using a Sidescan sonar. There are another 9 accompanying sheets that are linked to this map belonging to the same project. A copy of the map can be downloaded by selecting the appropriate link under 'Online resources' with permission from the Secretariat.To provide material for the construction of a road causeway, and possibly an airfield, linking Betio and Bairiki islands.
