This thesis used a combination of sediment, coral, fish, climatic, and oceanographic data, and focused on the Pohnpei Lagoon, examining a range of natural and human issues in the marine environment both at the local level (focusing on that within the Pohnpei Lagoon) and regional level (focusing on the western Pacific region).
Reports lagoon water quality includes on physio-chemical data
Millennium is a member of the southern group of the Line Islands chain in the equatorial Central Pacific and part of the Republic of Kiribati.
This is the first extensive survey of the marine natural history of Millennium lagoon. Also included in this report are observations of indications of human activity in the lagoon, which were present despite its remote location, and the potential significance of this activity on the marine communities surveyed.
This project report has two components
1) a field survey of the fish biodiversity of Tuvalu’s reefs and lagoons, as well as documenting the species commonly caught by local fishermen and
2) a field survey of selected macro-invertebrate and fish densities in Tuvalu’s lagoons, to assess the stocks of valuable species on each atoll and test the effectiveness of the Conservation Areas (CAs).
