The Toolkit provides information and summarizes what has been done in the Pacific in relation to mini‐grids
and  renewable  energy.  It  also  compares  different  policy  approaches,  and  highlights  lessons  learned.  The
primary purpose of the Toolkit is to assist [Pacific] Legislators make good energy‐related policy decisions with
the encompassing vision of: “available, reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy for the
sustainable development of all Pacific island communities”.

The e-Parliament : The e-Parliament is a new global forum for democratic legislators from across the political spectrum. It was designed to deal with a wide range of issues. Its purpose was to help spread and implement good policy ideas.
The main set of issues that we have taken up to begin with is climate, energy and ecosystems. Three immediate objectives are: 1. Encourage Pacific Legislators and Governments to improve legislation and governance regarding energy, including renewable energy, and particularly regarding access to energy for the poor.

COCOGEN Project : A number of Pacific Island countries have started to consider biofuels as a strategic renewable energy option. First successful trials to use straight coconut oil (CNO) have been undertaken in Fiji, Marshall Islands New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Both the University of the South Pacific and the University of Papua New Guinea have started scientific research on the subject. In general opportunities exist to utilize CNO and other vegetable oils as an alternative fuel for transport and electricity generation. Thus the objectives of this project were to;

Biofuel Energy Options : Biofuel energy options for the region have become more relevant as the trend for the price of crude oil continues upward. There has been a consequent increase in interest in evaluating the viability of alternative fuel options, especially locally-produced biofuels. SOPAC in its technical advisory capacity has continued to monitor progress and to distribute factual information on research findings and international development in the sector through its website and e-mail user group list.
