The Pacific Invasives Initiative (PII) is a sister partnership based at Auckland University which shares 6 partners with PILN. The goal of the PII is to contribute to conserving island biodiversity and enhancing the sustainability of island livelihoods by minimizing the spread and impacts of invasive species in the Pacific region. This is achieved by increasing support and developing capacity in the region for managing the impacts of these species.
A healthy environment is paramount to the well being and security of Solomon Islanders and with approximately 85 percent of the population relying on a subsistence lifestyle, sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity is critical. Loss of biodiversity and environmental services can lead to hunger, poverty, disease and conflict and is a threat to the internal security of Solomon Islands. It also leaves coastal communities vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to loss of protection for coastal habitats.

This Partnership Agreement is the result of an extensive Government led formulation process that used the Medium Term Development Strategy as its cornerstone and constitutes a single and unified United Nations Country Programme (UNCP) for 2008-2012 for UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, UNHCR, UNAIDS, OCHA, OHCHR, IFAD, UNIFEM, ILO, UNESCO, FAO, and UN HABITAT.

At the regional level, coordination of the implementation of the Pacific Plan is, in the first instance, the responsibility of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. This is consistent with the 2004 decision by Leaders that the primary functions of the Secretariat are to provide policy advice, coordmation and assistance in implementing their decisions. The Secretariat has therefore been restructured to more effectively undertake these responsibilities.
