The purpose of the 50 nautical mile zone of Cook Islands is entailed in the Marae Moana Act 2017. It is an Act to protect and conserve the ecological, biodiversity, and heritage values of the Cook Islands marine environment.
The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) is located in the Republic of Kiribati. It was established in January 2008 and is one of the largest oceanic coral archipelagic conservation in the world. The PIPA made it into the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List.
