The Cooperative Study on the Deepsea Mineral Resources in Selected Offshore Areas of the SOPAC Region, 2001 -Sea Area of the Republic of the Kiribati Islands.
The survey was carried out for the sea area of 13,400km2, within the Exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Kiribati.
The area was selected in accordance with the joint sturdy program for
deepsea mineral resources in the EEZ of the SOPAC member countries agreed upon by the Japanese
executing agency and South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) on February 27, 2003
This report provides details of CTD data collected in 2005 and 2006 in the equatorial Pacific Ocean during cruises to service the TAO/TRITON array, a network of deep ocean moored buoys deployed to support ENSO research and forecasting. The TAO/TRITON array, completed in 1994, consists of approximately 70 deep ocean moorings within 8 degrees of the equator spanning the Pacific Basin from 95◦W to 137◦E. Moorings west of 165◦E are maintained by the Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
A SOPAC project funded by the European Union and the Australian Government with the assistance of the Tuvalu Government ,involved a De 719e Raytheon precision echo sounder used to profile the seabed. Bathymetry data created from this was used as post-dredging data which was analyzed against 2 pre-dredging bathymetry data sets surveyed previously to assess changes in the lagoon sea floor.
