The survey was carried out over a period of six weeks in September and October 2005, resulting in the acquisition of over 900 km of multibeam echosounder (MBES) data. For Tarawa and Abaiang, the survey achieved 100% coverage of the seafloor from approximately 50 m depth in the nearshore
area to an average offshore distance of 3 km, reaching water depths of some 1 700 m.
This work was initiated by the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) and the European Union (EU) Reducing Vulnerability of Pacific ACP States
Project.
It is envisaged that data from the survey will be used to support activities in fisheries, mineral exploration, coastal management, and geo-hazard studies.
