The Nauru Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Project was started with funding from UNDP-GEF in 2008, with the goal of building Nauru’s capacity to implement a comprehensive regime for sustainable land management and to ensure that SLM is mainstreamed into all levels of decision-making. One of the outputs of the project is the development of a National Action Programme (NAP) and an Integrated Financial Strategy (IFS) to address land degradation and mitigate the effects of drought.
A draft NAP was first written in 2010 and has been updated in 2012. Considerable learning about SLM occurred in Nauru during this time and significant efforts to address issues surrounding SLM were undertaken. This report uses information uncovered during the first consultancy, and as discovered during the second, to describe the current social, economic and environmental situation on Nauru and the benefits that could be achieved from a SLM approach towards improving the population’s physical and mental health, building human capacity and strengthening community resilience.
