Apolima is a small island that is a part of Samoa, an island nation located in the central pacific. With current high fuel prices solar power is an economically reasonable alternative to diesel generation and the Apolima island installation is the first of many PV powered mini grid systems that are planned for the Anglophone Pacific Region.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Renewable Energy Division, under the auspices of the Joint Water Sector Steering Committee (JWSSC), conducted this feasibility study on the production of biogas through anaerobic digestion from household sewage and green waste as an alternative method of on-site waste management that will improve sanitation while also providing a useful energy source for domestic household use in the Vaitele peri-urban area.

This feasibility assessment has been prepared for New Zealand Aid Programme. The feasibility assessment is to assess the long-term feasibility of a proposed coconut oil extraction and biodiesel processing plant to fuel electricity generation on Savai'i and to recommend actions that would be required to ensure its long-term effectiveness.

The intended outcome of this preparatory phase is a detailed grid extension and off-grid renewable energy based rural electrification program to provide the remaining non-electrified households in Samoa with 24-hour power. As part of this preparatory phase a consultancy was undertaken for household survey design, surveyor training design, survey analysis, a feasibility study and preparation of a Project Document for completion of electrification in Samoa.

The Inception report was prepared by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).  Electricity supply in the Solomon Islands is provided to less than 20 % of the population. Almost all generation is based on imported diesel fuel. Apart from this high dependence on external supply, the country also faces challenges in the development of the energy sector, including maintaining reliability, ensuring commercial viability of the power utility SIEA and increasing access to modern energy supply.
