This report was prepared by AWS Truewind for the World Bank. Using its WindSurvey system, AWS has produced maps of the predicted long term annual wind speed at heights of 12, 25 and 45 meters above ground and with a grid spacing of 1000m for the Far East Islands (PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji). The wind maps indicate that the low lying areas in southwestern Papua New Guinea has the best wind resource in that country. These speeds can be partially attributed to low surface roughness values and their perpendicular orientation  to the prevailing southeasterly winds.

This report was prepared by Herbert Wade and Peter Johnston for UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok. The purpose of this assignment was to undertake a rapid needs assessment and gap analysis of the fifteen Pacific Island Countries that potentially can participate in the UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Energy Program for Poverty Reduction (REP-PoR).  Ideally, such a study would involve travel to each country to allow extensive local input and as much discussion in-country as possible.

This REP PoR Pacific Rapid Assessment and Gap Analysis report is presented in three parts:

This report was prepared by Gerhard Zieroth. The use of coconut oil as a substitute for diesel fuel is attracting increasing interest. This MSc thesis enhances the understanding of this technology and points out directions for its future application in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) as well as other Pacific Island Countries. The research work was undertaken by the PIEPSAP project in cooperation with RWTH University in Aachen and it is based on a literature review and field data obtained in RMI and Fiji.

The review team consisted of Herbert Wade (rural electrification), Yves Lambert (renewable energy) and Marion Ferguson (community and social development). The PREFACE programme is an $3.45 million joint effort of Australia and France with the goal of advancing social and economic development through the use of sustainable renewable energy technologies in the Pacific region. The stated purpose of the project is to increase the utilization of sustainable renewable energy technologies, in particular solar photovoltaics and wind energy technologies, in island and rural communities.

This report has been prepared by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS Science) exclusively for and under contract to Ministry of Research Science and Technology. This desktop study provides an overview of the geothermal potential of selected Pacific islands and territories. It has been based on an initial literature review of 20 Pacific countries and then a subsequent more detailed review of five Pacific countries, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and the Northern Mariana Islands.

This report was prepared by Rupeni Mario. This paper is the result of discussions held during the Regional Energy Meeting (REM) 2000 and the SOPAC STAR Energy Working Group 2000 meeting which noted the need to provide technical information on “New Energy Technologies”, in particular, hydrogen fuel, ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) and space solar power generation. As Pacific island countries vary widely in terms of natural resource endowment and energy use patterns, they still remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels to meet their increasing energy needs.

This report was prepared for the Pacific Energy Oversight Group by Allan Mua Illingworth, Thomas Lynge Jensen and Katerina Syngellakis. The Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Energy Security in the Pacific (FAESP) 2010-2020 was endorsed in August 2010 at the 41st Pacific Islands Forum in Port Vila, Vanuatu and in April 2011 the Inaugural Regional Meeting of Ministers of Energy, ICT and Transport endorsed the associated draft Implementation Plan for Energy Security in the Pacific (IPESP) 2010-2015.

This report was done by George Wilkenfeld and Associates to the Forum Secretariat Energy Division. This study was commissioned by the Forum Secretariat Energy Division, to gather information needed to make decisions on the establishment of a labelling program on a regional (or sub-regional) basis.

This report was prepared by Allison Woodruff for the Regional Energy Officials Meeting in the Cook Islands 2007. The case studies were chosen in order to reflect as wide a range of renewable technologies as possible in a variety of different Pacific island settings. These include O’ua Island, which is part of the Ha’apai Solar Electrification Project in Tonga; the Bulelavata Micro-Hydroelectric Project in the Solomon Islands; the Welagi and Vanua Balavu Coconut Biofuel Projects in Fiji; and the Mangaia Wind Project in the Cook Islands.

 Pacific Data Hub

This report was prepared by Allison Woodruff and it was prepared for the 24th Science, Technology and Resources Network (STAR) Conference. This paper examines the potential for renewable energy technologies to promote sustainable development in rural areas in Pacific island countries. The current heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels for meeting the primary needs of countries is examined, as well as rising oil prices and the high costs associated with supplying electricity to rural areas.
