State of Environment Report 1993 & State of Environment Report 2022

Tuvalu’s State of Environment Report was first developed in 1993 to raise awareness among the people of Tuvalu on all environmental issues and to use the report in decision making. This year (2022), the Department of Environment under the Ministry of PublicWorks, Infrastructure, Environment,Labour, Meteorology and Disaster (MPWIELMD) is pleased to present the 2nd Tuvalu State of Environment Report 2022.

This paper investigates the water quality of the densely populated lagoonal coasts in Fongafale Islet, and the occurrence of water pollution. A comparison was then made with less populated natural coast in the islet. The primary pollution sources and pollution mechanism were identified. Through this investigation, the need for effective water quality control measures for coastal conservation is demonstrated.

In 2018, the Federated State of Micronesia through the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management (DECEM) with the support of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) assisted in the formulation of the Federated States of Micronesia National Environment Management Strategy (NEMS) 2019–2023.

The FSM NEMS was developed based on data and information in the FSM State of Environment report, formed
as a prerequisite of the NEMS.

• Where is the environment of Tonga headed based on the assessed thematic areas?
