This document is part of a technical report series on conservation projects funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) and the Conservation International Pacific Islands Program (CI-Pacific). This dataset contains preliminary impact assessments of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai volcanic eruption and induced tsunami in January 2022.
The eruptions sent a plume of ash, gas and steam 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) into the air. Satellite imagery showed a massive ash cloud and shockwaves spreading from the eruption. Ash was falling from the sky in the Tonga capital, Nuku'alofa, Saturday evening and phone connections were down. The eruption was likely the biggest recorded anywhere on the planet in more than 30 years, according to experts.
This publication intends to assist project designers, regulators and decision makers to anticipate and address all relevant public health, socio‐economic and environmental concerns that may arise when under‐ taking a desalination project, for obtaining maximum beneficial use of the desalinated water in terms of quality, safety and environmental protection.

Fishing has been major source of food, income, recreation activity, employment and various other economic benefits for the people of Pacific island countries and territories (PICTs). However with increases in population, urbanisation and development of fisheries, it has been realised that fisheries resources, although renewable are not infinite. They must be properly managed if their contribution to the nutritional, economic and social well-being of the growing population is to be sustained.

People care about coasts. Around the world, hundreds of millions of people live their lives on and derive their livelihoods from
coasts and coastal resources. Hundreds of millions more people who don't live on the coast use them for recreation or depend on
the resources and environmental services they produce. The damage caused by human activities, whether it is from habitat loss, pollution damage or increased exposure to natural disasters caused by things such as mangrove destruction, attract great political and public concern.

Streams and rivers on islands are considerably different to continental systems in that oceanic island systems are often subject to recurrent flash flooding and many fauna in continental systems are only distantly related to island fauna, rarely having an obligate marine larval phase of their life cycles. Several methods used in surveying continental systems are therefore only of limited applicability in island systems. The field procedures described herein are loosely adapted from those described in Parham, 2005 and Fitzsimons et.
The Republic of Nauru is a single raised limestone island or makatea with a total area of only 22 km2 (Figure 1), but with jurisdiction over 320,000 km2 of ocean surrounding the island under the United Nations Law of the Sea convention. The island consists mainly of a flat plateau that descends to a narrow coastal fringe where most of the population dwell. The plateau interior contains extensive deposits of phosphate bearing rock which have been mined since the beginning of the twentieth century.

PNG also has one of the diverse reef system in the world and has a total of 3.12 square kilometers of economic exclusive zone (EEZ) of marine territory. Over 840 spoken languages exist and spoken by over 1000 different tribes.
