The Census of Population and Dwellings is a five yearly stock take of people in the Cook Islands and their housing. It is the primary source of information on the size, composition, distribution, economic activities and state of well being of the population. The most fundamental questions it will answer concern the size and distribution of the entire population, the extent to which men and women participate in the economy, and the nature of housing and household facilities.

Tonga Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2009 (HIES), undertaken by the Tonga Statistics Department during the period from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2009. The 2010 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) is the second survey of income and expenditure in Vanuatu to provide reliable sub-national estimates, with the 2006 HIES being the first time this was attempted. The first HIES was conducted in 1985 in the two urban centres of Luganville and Port Vila. Another was conducted in 1998 but unfortunately, for a number of reasons to do with errors of estimation and observation, the 1998 HIES did not provide reliable and accurate estimates. With the lessons learnt from past experience, the main objectives for the 2010 survey were to:

This Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) is a critical component of the work of the Cook Islands Statistics Office (CISO). The survey provides major indicators of the economic health of the nation and the well being of its people. For example Cook Islands residents (as opposed to businesses, government or tourists) consume a significant proportion of goods and services available in the Cook Islands. Changes in consumer and household spending patterns reflect changes in the economy and in individual and social behaviour.

HIES collects a wealth of information on HH income and expenditure, such as source of income by industry, HH expenditure on goods and services, and income and expenditure associated with subsistence production and consumption. In addition to this, HIES collects information on sectoral and thematic areas, such as education, health, labour force, primary activities, transport, information and communication, transfers and remittances, food expenditure (acquisition) and gender.

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented crisis globally. Under the slowdown in economic activity due to the protective measures enacted by governments around the world, global GDP is expected to contract by 5.2 percent, with per capita incomes in most emerging and developing countries forecast to shrink; potentially pushing many millions into poverty and deepening deprivation. In Papua New Guinea, the socio-economic impacts of these measures are coumpeded by geographic dispersion and isolation, weak institutions and unequal access to services for vulnerable populations.
