This report is the first of its kind to be prepared using data collected by the Statistics Department (SD) on the impact of a cyclone in Tonga. Tropical Cyclone Gita hit the main island of Tongatapu and the island of ‘Eua on the night of Monday, 12th February 2018 as a destructive category 4 storm, causing severe damages to these two islands which consists of about 80% of the Total population of Tonga.
The 2012 Population and Housing census of Tuvalu is the second census conducted by the Central Statistics Division since Tuvalu gained political independence in 1978. The Agriculture Census 2007 was the third undertaken in Vanuatu for the purpose of compiling information on agriculture, forestry and fisheries resources. Data collected will be used to formulate plans, policies and programs for the development and improvement of these sectors.
The primary objective of the Census is to determine the official count of the number of persons and households in Kiribati in 2020 and can be used to compare their socio-economic characteristics with those 5 years ago collected in the 2015 Population Census. Results of the census are most useful for government of Kiribati for planning and policy formulation and thus have a direct impact on the Kiribati population.
Taken every 10 years, the census information is an important development planning resource available to Government, Province and Local Administrations, International Agencies, NGO's, businesses, communities and the general public.
