The Census of Population and Dwellings is a five yearly stock take of people in the Cook Islands and their housing. It is the primary source of information on the size, composition, distribution, economic activities and state of well being of the population. The most fundamental questions it will answer concern the size and distribution of the entire population, the extent to which men and women participate in the economy, and the nature of housing and household facilities.

The Population and Housing Census 2020 was the 9th census carried out in Palau since 1980. The Population and Housing Census is a vast and complex undertaking. It is certainly the largest statistical exercise we can contemplate, touching, as it does, every individual and household in the Kingdom. The result of the census has an important role in producing official statistics for Palau and providing fundamental information for measuring SDG indicators.

Tonga Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2009 (HIES), undertaken by the Tonga Statistics Department during the period from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2009. This is the second survey of its kind in Tonga. The last one was carried out in 2000/01, and the results were used in November 2002 to rebase the Consumer Price Index (CPI). A report from that survey was produced in December 2002, and where possible, results from this report will be made to be comparable to the previous report.

The 2010 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) is the second survey of income and expenditure in Vanuatu to provide reliable sub-national estimates, with the 2006 HIES being the first time this was attempted. The first HIES was conducted in 1985 in the two urban centres of Luganville and Port Vila. Another was conducted in 1998 but unfortunately, for a number of reasons to do with errors of estimation and observation, the 1998 HIES did not provide reliable and accurate estimates. With the lessons learnt from past experience, the main objectives for the 2010 survey were to:

A national population census may be thought of as a “stock-taking” of the whole country, particularly of its most precious resource, its people. It is not just a count of people. Information is needed on the structure of the population for instance, the number of males and females and their ages together with a variety of other characteristics related to their civil and economic status.
