Climate change poses an unprecedented level of threat to life on the planet. In addition, predictions about the scale and speed of impact are continually being revised upwards, so that what was already a serious situation continues to look even more threatening. The facts are well known. Atmospheric greenhouse gases are creating warmer temperatures, ice melt, sea-level rise and an unpredictable climate, with a range of extremely serious and hard-to-predict consequences. Recent research shows an increasingly bleak picture.
The rational for this Policy Brief is to make clear the vital benefits of integrating
biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management by taking the Ecosystemsbased
Adaptation approach along with the Green Economy Initiative to achieve
equitable multiple win-win objectives to ensure the continued well-being of human
society in the future.

The combined pressures of climate change and development will not only aggravate existing challenges to the conservation of biodiversity in the Pacific, but also introduce new difficulties. There are a wide range of historical, current and planned studies that examine specific aspects of the relationship between climate change, conservation and development in the Pacific.
As climate change, disrupts local economies, ecosystems and biodiversity in Latin America and the Caribbean, implementing effective solutions is paramount. Over the last decade, UNDP has worked with countries to deploy Nature-based solutions (NbS) as an approach to meeting these multiple interconnected challenges while enhancing jobs and livelihoods and providing other socio-economic and ecosystem service benefits.

This report presents Volume 1 (of three volumes) prepared as part of the Solomon Islands Ecosystems and Socio-economic Resilience Analysis and Mapping (ESRAM) to assess and prioritise climate change-related ecosystem-based adapation options for selected locations in Solomon Islands. Volume 1 provides the generic project background and methodology relevant to all three volumes, together with the high level national scale assessment.

Mangrove ecosystems are under pressure due to anthropogenic stressors and sea level rise. The resilience of mangroves will depend on the rate of accretion of sediments compared to the rate of sea level rise and their capability to colonise higher elevation areas or buffer zones. This will also be affected by the measures to protect the existing mangroves against anthropogenic pressures.

Tuvalu, a small island nation in the Pacific, has in recent years lost about one metre of land around the circumference of its largest atoll due to changes in storm conditions and rising sea levels. Tuvalu is one of the worlds lowest lying countries, with its highest point standing a mere four and a half metres above sea level. Half of Tuvalus population of 11,000 people live just three metres above sea level

Agriculture s the foundation of and heart of the rural PNG economy with over 85% of its 7.5 million people depending on the sector for their livelihoods. This sector is faced with so many challenges including climate change, lack of access to markets and so on. The access to suitable and timely information and knowledge is also seen to be one of the key drawbacks of agriculture advancement in PNG.
Atmosphere and Climate Physical Climate Cook Islands consists of data on local knowledge on climate variability, energy in Cook Islands and Review of mainstreaming of climate change into national plans and policies in Cook Islands
Data on adaptation measures including access to rainwater tanks, food and live animals exported and imported and improved agriculture varieties. Also has information on monthly sea level rise in Rarotonga and other imported data which can help assess adaptation to Climate Change
Our SoE Report spans seven themes and 18 sub-topics. For example, the Atmosphere and Climate theme has the sub-topics of Climate Adaptation, Ozone Depleting Substances and Greenhouse Gases and Physical Climate.

Climate change is expected to cause extinctions when native plants and animals are prevented from migrating out of their hotter or drier habitats to more suitable climates. But for many species a more
The First United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (also known as the Earth Summit) acknowledged that SIDS
are a special case for sustainable development (given their unique and particular
vulnerabilities). This gave rise to the First International Conference on SIDS in 1994
and the Barbados Program of Action (BPOA) which is the main policy framework
addressing the economic, social and environmental vulnerabilities facing SIDS. The
Resilience underpins the sustainability of both ecological and social systems. Extensive loss of reef corals following recent mass bleaching events have challenged the notion that support of system resilience is a viable reef management strategy.
