This report provides a technical description of the Tongan marine survey. Where multibeam data was collected for the two islands of Tongatapu and Niuafoou, this data set includes the Basin A area north of Nukualofa and a single beam survey of Tongatapu's Fangauta lagoon, as this was identified as major interest areas during a stakeholder consultation exercise conducted in late 2002 (SOPAC, 2002).SOPAC has implemented a project Reducing Vulnerability of Pacific ACP states with funding secured from the European Union (EDF8).

This record holds the bathymetry chart of seabed around the island of Niuafoou. The chart is the result of the multibeam bathymetry survey that was undertaken by the Applied Geoscience and Technology Division (SOPAC) of SPC over a period of 5 weeks from 31 of January to the 01st of February 2004 in Niuafoou. The surveyed area extends from the coast to approximately 10 km offshore. Water depths within the surveyed area ranged from 10 to 1500 m offshore and between 0 to 7 m within the lagoon.

In January 1993, a SEAFRAME (Sea Level Fine Resolution Acoustic Measuring Equipment) gauge was installed in Nukualofa, Tonga. Readings(height observations) recorded from the gauge, is held in this record and provided in the form of Yearly Reports, Tide Prediction Calendars and Hourly Sea Level and meteorological data (update frequency- real time) from the Nukualofa station. This is downloadable from the Distribution Info Section of this metadata record. The gauge has been returning high resolution, good scientific quality data since its installation.

The Biological Rapid Assessment Programme (BIORAP) is a biological survey based on a concept developed by Conservation International and designed to use scientific information to catalyse conservation action. BIORAP methods are designed to rapidly assess the biodiversity of highly diverse areas and to train local scientists in biodiversity survey techniques. The BIORAP can be considered a spatial and temporal ‘snapshot’ of Vava’u’s full range of biodiversity.

Situated between Fiji to the west and Samoa to the northeast, the Kingdom of Tonga (referred
to as Tonga) is comprised of 171 scattered islands of which less than 50 are inhabited. The islands are
mainly composed of limestone formed from uplifted coral. Current critical environmental concerns have
arisen due to deforestation; damage to coral reefs and the introduction and spread of invasive alien
species. Anthropogenic pressure has resulted in extensive modification of all ecosystems on the

Tonga is one of the many islands that are endowed with unique resources and derives much of its economic, environmental and social well-being directly or indirectly from its environment.
Tonga harbours numerous special ecosystems: from the peak of Mt, Talau in Vava’u, to the serenity of Vai Lahi in Niuafo’ou; the vulnerability of the Ha’apai Group to ‘Eua’s National
Forest and to the Fanga’uta Lagoon in Tongatapu. Beyond the aesthetic beauty of the ecosystems to tourists and visitors; they provide immense support to the communities whose

In June/July 2002 an eradication programme to remove Pacific rats from Maninita Island in the Vava'u group of the Kingdom of Tonga was initiated. The techniques used were similar to those
used in successful rat eradications in New Zealand, in that Pestoff 20R pellets and a network of bait stations were used.
Conditions on the island were not what was expected, the forest having been adversely affected by cyclone Waka and subsequent defoliation by caterpillars, resulting in an open forest canopy. Rats were found to be present on the island in high numbers and were breeding.
