On 2 April 2007, a large earthquake and tsunami hit the western Solomon Islands causing varying degrees of damage and disruption to coastal communities. This assessment is focused on immediate damage to and needs of the coastal fisheries, including environment and infrastructure, though the opportunity was taken to assess more general damage and threats to the long term, sustainable recovery of coastal fisheries.
The amended Code of the Federated States of Micronesia states in section 104 that the exclusive economic zone is contiguous to the territorial sea. The inner boundary of the exclusive economic zone of each island or atoll is the seaward boundary of the territorial sea, and the outer boundary is a line, every point of which is two hundred nautical miles seaward of the nearest point on the baseline.
This paper focuses on the environmental challenges of sustainable development issues with particular attention to natural resource management, environment and climate change in the food and agriculture sector (including crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry).
