To maintain long-term ocean health, we need marine managed areas to ensure that special places and life forms are available for future generations. This interactive mapping application provides detailed information on over 7,000 managed saltwater and coastal areas worldwide.

Managed areas in the High Seas help maintain long-term ocean health by protecting important habitats and the marine organisms that depend on them. This interactive map provides detailed information on different types protected areas beyond national jurisdiction, including treaty areas, regulated management and protected areas, and unregulated areas in need of protection.

The GOA-ON Data Explorer provides access and visualization to ocean acidification data and data synthesis products being collected around the world from a wide range of sources, including moorings, research cruises, and fixed time series stations. Conservation International, GRID-Arendal and Geoscience Australia recently collaborated to produce a map of the global distribution of seafloor geomorphic features. The global seafloor geomorphic features map represents an important contribution towards the understanding of the distribution of blue habitats. Certain geomorphic feature are known to be good surrogates for biodiversity. For example, seamounts support a different suite of species to abyssal plains.

This dataset shows the global distribution of seamounts and knolls identified using global bathymetric data at 30 arc-sec resolution. A total of 33,452 seamounts and 138,412 knolls were identified, representing the largest global set of identified seamounts and knolls to date. Seamount habitat was found to constitute
approximately 4.7% of the ocean floor, whilst knolls covered 16.3%. The research leading to these results received funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme, and from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Global Volcanism Program database currently contains 1422 volcanoes with eruptions during the Holocene period (approximately the last 10,000 years). This resource contains the mapped locations of the Holocene volcanoes thoughout the world in shapefile format.
