The Census of Population and Dwellings is a five yearly stock take of people in the Cook Islands and their housing. It is the primary source of information on the size, composition, distribution, economic activities and state of well being of the population. The most fundamental questions it will answer concern the size and distribution of the entire population, the extent to which men and women participate in the economy, and the nature of housing and household facilities.

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) Pilot programme is the latest initiative of the ILO to support the implementation of the international standards on statistics of work, employment and labour underutilization recently adopted by the 19th International Conference of Labour Statisticians . This Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) is a critical component of the work of the Cook Islands Statistics Office (CISO). The survey provides major indicators of the economic health of the nation and the well being of its people. For example Cook Islands residents (as opposed to businesses, government or tourists) consume a significant proportion of goods and services available in the Cook Islands. Changes in consumer and household spending patterns reflect changes in the economy and in individual and social behaviour.
