Tuvalu, Nui, Bathymetry Chart, 1 :25 000 #1

Nui is a N-S elongated atoll island approximately 8.1 km long and 2.5 km wide, centred on 7 degrees 13'S
and 177 degrees 9'E. It has some eight major islands and a number of smaller islets, surrounding a central ponding lagoon system. There are no islands on the western leeward side of the lagoon. The surveyed area extends to an average of approximately 5.0 km offshore, however, there is a 500 m-wide swath with no coverage, at a distance of approximately 2.5 km from the shoreline. The resultant data for the Tuvalu marine survey in 2004 was used to produce nine bathymetry charts for Tuvalu at scales ranging from 1:20 000 to 1:50 000 and the Nui Bathymetry Chart is available for download from the Distribution Info

This work was initiated by the SOPAC/EU Reducing Vulnerability of Pacific ACP States Project (Task no.: TV 1.1.1).To provide a descriptive picture of the ocean bottom terrain, vividly revealing the size, shape and distribution of underwater features, and serve as the basic tool for scientific, engineering, marine geophysical and environmental studies, as well as marine and coastal resource management. The water depth within the survey area around Nui ranges from 2.5 to 2466.5 m. The atoll of Nui is surrounded by a scarp with a depth to the headscarp of approximately 100 m, and a headscarp height of 80 m.
