The survey confirmed the finding from the initial cetacean survey in 2001 that humpback whales have not recovered from commercial whaling and appear to be in very low numbers in Samoan waters. A seminar held at the National University of Samoa concluded the survey and highlighted preliminary results.

In order to showcase knowledge and solutions related to nature conservation action in the Pacific Islands, the original face-to-face conference provided space in its programme for 61 parallel sessions, each with a duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
By going virtual a lot of that space in teh agenda was lost, but we still wanted to bring those stories! By creating a virtual galleries on the website and by the event feed on the conference platform, we were able to provide new and open spaces for lightning stories to be told and striking facts to be shared!

This BIORAP (Biological Rapid Assessment Program) survey was undertaken as part of the process to facilitate improved management of the forests and biodiversity of Upland Savaii. More specifically, the survey was conducted to fill key gaps in the knowledge of this globally important put poorly studied region of montane and cloud forests. This information will be used to make better informed decisions on the conservation management of the biodiversity in the area in conjunction with Savaii land-owning communities, relevant government departments and other partners.
There are active drinking water or freshwater monitoring progra mmes in 11 of 14 Pacific countries and 6 of 7 territories. The primary challenge is the regularity and frequency of sampling, the capacity to process samples accurately in country, and the official response process to the findings. There is no regional data collation for this proposed indicator , to date. Escherichia coli occurs naturally in human and animal intestines and therefore can be used as a proxy for untreated sewage contamination or other pollution.

Simplifying coral reef ecosystems to a single number for a country, or for a region, runs counter to our knowledge of the complexity and variability that characterise healthy reefs in a healthy ocean scape.
The status of the region’s forests was deemed Fair to Good, with the majority of Pacific islands still having relatively high for est cover, higher than the global average. A national-scale Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) is one of the four key strategies in the recently launched Samoa Oceans Strategy (SOS) 2020-2030. The SOS aims to use the MSP process to support ecosystem-based adaptation, while strengthening community engagement in actions that enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change. As part of the MSP process, the Samoan Government has identified Samoa’s special and/or unique marine areas (SUMAs). This report synthesises data, literature and the outputs of a dedicated workshop identifying the selected areas.
