An earthquake hazard map provides, at any location, the value of a ground motion intensity measure (for example, horizontal peak ground acceleration, PGA) that is expected to be exceeded at least once in 100 year mean return period. The earthquake hazard maps are developed by determining the simulated ground motion intensities at every gridded location for 10,000 realizations of next-year activity of earthquake events. At each grid location, the intensities are ranked and the ground motion intensity of the mean return period of interest is recorded.
Based on literature review and meetings with community residents, acute health effects from ambient particulates on airway, mucosa, and skin of residents, especially neonates and infants, are strongly suspected. Previous studies on environmental impacts of phosphate mining also indicate a potential contamination with radionuclide including radon and radon progeny and effects on cancer developments including lung cancer, leukemia. In addition to these, cadmium contamination of air, water, and biota should also be included as a potential threat to Aiwo community and nearby districts.
This is the 2018 NIEP developed by DCIE with support from SPREP, UNEP, UNDP. The NIEP is a 5 year implementation plan to address environmental issues.
