Papua New Guinea has large tracts of intact mangrove forest with a high species diversity extending over many thousands of shore kilometers and, in many regions, penetrating quite deeply inland.
Mangrove ecosystem is very useful and critical to PNG coastal communities. Its uses ranges from carbon sequestration, buffers coastlines against storm surges and sea level rise, breeding ground for fisheries, building, firewood, medicinal purposes to name a few.

The Global Mangrove Watch (GMW) is a collaboration between Aberystwyth University (U.K.), solo Earth Observation (soloEO; Japan), Wetlands International the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The information presented here is based on two case study
sites in Malaita Province (Langalanga Lagoon and Maramasike
Passage). Research at these sites have been undertaken under the
CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural systems, through
the Mangrove Ecosystem for Climate Change and Livelihoods
project (Maramasike Passage) funded by the German Federal
Ministry for The Environment, Nature and Conservation and
Nuclear Safety (BMU) with support from IUCN and MECDM and
a project on Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries Management in
Under the MESCAL project, the objectives of this assessment are to;
* Improve understanding of mangrove ecosystem functions, values, key threats, and processes at a local and regional scale;
* Provide a standardized method to assess shoreline mangrove condition and change over time;
* Generate community awareness of mangroves and encourage local environmental stewardship;
* Conduct a rapid and representative survey of fish and mobile crustacean assemblages;
The overall objectives of the mangroves survey is conservation of biodiversity by means of sustainable used of mangroves ecosystem and natural resources. In supporting the objectives two primary objectives need to be address;
1. Collecting baseline data on mangrove and associated ecosystem at Koloa and Holeva and other sites as time permits
2. To develop mangroves species zoning using QGIS application and software along with GPS and using the Pacific Mangrove Monitoring Manual as a field guide and methodology.
This manual is a tool in improving mangrove management, augmenting or restoring a mangrove conservation
ethic, and reversal of trends in human-caused degradation of mangroves.
This report documents the diversity of terrestrial plants and animals within the FSM that varies from east to west due to differences in climate (particularly rainfall), geology, topography and geographical isolation.
