This record holds, GIS layers that contains poly-lines and point features representing the maritime boundaries of Solomon Islands. The 5 sets of basepoints, represent the 5 different sets of basepoints around the 5 different archipelago of the Solomon Islands. This includes a gazetted polyline representing the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone over which Vanuatu has sovereign rights, for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources of the seabed, subsoil and superjacent waters. The layers represent the archipelagic straight baselines and base points for the country's maritime zone. The Secretariat has updated these baselines against more recent and accurate information supplied by the respective Government and verified by the SOPAC Division, Maritime boundary mapping and survey project team . The Pacific Islands Regional Maritime Boundaries data release contains the revised straight baselines as are currently proclaimed. This dataset was verified in 2010 and currently being updated.

These baselines are held at the Secretariat on behalf of the Solomon Island Government and can be downloaded from the appropriate link under the Distribution Infor section.These GIS layers are a unique delineation of maritime boundaries of the different member Pacific Island countries. These baselines can be used for diverse purposes by government agencies, surveyors, environmentalist, mariners and other individuals. These applications include biogeography for the creation of species distribution lists per country, determination of legal catch area for fishing, marine transportation, determination of pollution and other environmental issues within a coastal state , regulate disturbance of sea floor activities, educational purposes and a variety of other applications.The Solomon Islands is situated in the Western Pacific between 5° South and 12° South and 1550 Eastand 170° East. The southern and eastern Solomon Islands were progressively placed under Britishprotection in the 1890s and Santa Isabel and the other islands to the north were ceded by Germany in1900. Full self-government was achieved on 2 January 1976 and independence on 7 July 1978.The land area of the Solomon Islands is estimated to be 29,785 sq km and the approximate populationis 426,855 (July 1997 est.)
