The New Guinea Challenge - Development and Conservation in Societies of Great Cultural and Biological diversity
This first state of the environment report for the Pacific region uses regional environment indicators to assess the status, trends, and data quality and availability for the endorsed Pacific environmental priorities. This report also includes an update of the State of Conservation in Oceania report produced in 2013, which was endorsed and published in 2017.
This report stems from a simple observation: that since Independence in 1975, Papua New Guinea’s economic and social development outcomes have not matched people’s aspirations or government promises. Indeed, despite the abundance of its riches, PNG lags behind its Pacific neighbours on many important development indicators.
The 2020 State of Environment Report is the first for Papua New Guinea.
To see all species of manta rays and their relatives protected or effectively managed for sustainable/non consumptive use by the people closest to them, in a means that promotes wider ocean conservation.
